Humanity seems bound for extinction until one scared, lonely Lapropod steps forward to carry out a confused and uncertain rebellion. Bibix could bring freedom to his people - if he can enlist the aid of renegade humans, who have several good reasons to despise him and his kind. Bibix recruits Carl Tippet, a human soldier, to help him learn the art of war. Carl's hatred of the Lapropods will test Bibix in ways he never thought possible. While his exploits in the harsh Alaskan environment inspire the peaceable alien, the man's violent nature terrifies him.
